The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today

Mark Twain gave the period after the Civil War (approximately 30 years after) the name "The Gilded Age" because he believed the period was "glittering on the surface, but corrupt underneath". In collaboration with Charles Dudley Warner, Twain wrote a book titled, The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today.

The book is mainly about a poor Tennessee family that wants to sell there farm land to make money, but is waiting for the right time. The land never gets sold, then their adopted daughter goes to Washington D.C. to try and get the government to buy her families land. The general theme is the hope to acquire great riches, especially through land. Certain characters represent how corrupt the time period was with their will to do anything for money and power.

However, because the book was published early in the gilded age, there is not much reference to the political machines, industrialization, and corporations.

Intro

Honestly, I am not excited for this at all, mostly because I despise social networking. However, I will try my best to make this a positive experience. This first blog is to explain the purpose of me blogging. I am blogging to discuss how history events affect my every day life. Weather you realize it or not, history in some way or another affects you every day and makes you who you are.
